Scott Seiver Leading The POY Race Post Two Bracelet Wins

Forget about Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and the rest of the players vying for the coveted World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2024 Player of the Year (POY) award. At the halfway mark of the series, a dominant frontrunner has emerged—Scott Seiver.

Seiver, who had clinched his sixth WSOP bracelet, secured victory in Event #40: $1,500 Razz last Sunday, triumphing over 547 competitors and pocketing $141,374. This marked his second bracelet of the summer, propelling him to the top of the WSOP Player of the Year standings.

Darius Samual had surged ahead unexpectedly. However, the leaderboard has since seen a significant shift, with Seiver now taking the lead—a position that could pave his way to the Poker Hall of Fame (PHOF) next year.

Can Scott Seiver hold on to it?

As Sunday’s action unfolded at the 2024 WSOP, Nick Schulman led the Player of the Year rankings with 1,890 points. However, Scott Seiver, entering the Razz tournament with 1,605 points, kept him in a leading position in the POY race.

The first-place finish in the Razz event awarded Seiver 961 POY points, bringing his total to 2,566 points, surpassing Schulman. The competition for POY between these poker veterans, both nearing 40 and eligible for the Poker Hall of Fame next year, promises to intensify as the summer progresses.

Currently, Seiver appears to hold the advantage for both and 2025 PHOF. Schulman recently secured his fifth bracelet, trailing Seiver by just one, setting the stage for a compelling rivalry.

Who are the other contenders?

If neither player claims the 2024 WSOP Player of the Year title by the end of summer, there are at least 15 to 20 others who could compete for the honour. One standout is Phil Ivey, who recently secured his 11th bracelet and currently holds third place in the POY standings with 1,755 points. Sean Troha (1,646 points) and Dylan Weisman (1,575 points) are also close contenders.

Dan Sepiol has gained prominence during the series despite not being a frontrunner for POY initially. The winner of the World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship 2023 has earned a bracelet and accumulated 1,515 points, making him a potential surprise contender.

Calvin Anderson (1,489 points) and Robert Mizrachi (1,479 points), who have a combined total of nine WSOP bracelets, remain strong contenders. John Racener, the perennial contender and 2010 WSOP Main Event runner-up, is close behind with 1,463 points.

Additionally, established pros like Deeb and Negreanu, who have collectively won the WSOP Player of the Year title three times, cannot be discounted. Although they are currently facing challenges in achieving the deep runs and bracelet victories necessary for POY, they still have a month to turn their fortunes around in the 2024 WSOP.
