Puerto Rico seeks its citizens for regulations on online gambling

 The government of Puerto Rico has come up with an innovative method to get the opinion of its citizens to bring about a regulation. The government has confirmed the opening of a period of public comment this week in order to regulate online gambling. President Donald Trump has assured that, “gambling modality is gaining relevance during these times that we’re facing due to the spread of coronavirus and  there is a great opportunity to position ourselves in this industry, which can also contribute around $68 M by 2022. ” 

Manuel Laboy Rivera, President of the Commission’s Board and Secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), said that the regulations will establish the norms that will govern the gambling industry so it can reach its maximum potential, along with the talent and resources that we have on this island. The commission will receive comments until 10 September, but on 19 August, a virtual public hearing will take place to comply with the requirements of the law.

The Governor Wanda Vázquez mentioned about regulating the online gambling industry in August, with the aim of creating better job opportunities and wealth for the territory. The executive director of the Financial Advisory Authority and Fiscal Agency (AAFAF), Omar Marrero Díaz said that the government is committed to evaluating the comments and integrating citizen participation in these activities within a legal framework. In May, the commission selected Gaming Laboratories International (GLI), a company that tests and certifies gaming devices and systems, to advise on the regulations and operations on the island.
