Authorities in Texas are now checking what could become the Texas poker shooting incident as to whether a man killed another one after a fight broke out between them. According to the Austin Police Department, Martin Tovar shot and killed Steve Gonzalez, accused of cheating in a poker game that took place in a private residence. Interestingly, Tovar and Steve were not directly involved with each other in the altercation that led to the shooting.
It all began when an unidentified poker player accused Steve Gonzalez of cheating at a game held at a private residence on Teri Road in the Texas capital. Gonzalez insulted the man and his family. An altercation ensued, and Gonzalez punched the man in the face. It was at this point that Tovar and another player attempted to break the fight. In the melee, Gonzales attacked the unidentified player with a chair.

Gonzalez would then leave the residency, threatening to return. Martin allegedly went to his car, got a handgun and shot multiple times in the ground. Witnesses said Gonzalez also returned to the residence with what seemed to be a handgun. A juvenile witness maintains she saw Tovar shoot Gonzales thrice in the chest. Tovar was arrested shortly after, and a 911 call went out almost immediately. In Texas, first-degree murder is also termed as ‘capital murder’, and the sentence could be anything from 5 to 99 years.
There are, of course, multiple accounts of what actually happened. According to Tovar, Gonzales stormed into the residence and pointed a gun at the unknown poker player. Tovar said that he attempted to reach for the gun, which had already been fired thrice. Witnesses say that they never saw Gonzalez brandish a gun. Tovar has been arrested under first-degree murder charges.
Poker series are held all over the world and are in some of the safest locations, with cutting-edge security and everything in place; private poker games are the exact opposite. Alcoholic beverages are also commonplace in such scenarios. With people either winning or losing considerable amounts of money at poker, the scenario could get from bad to worse at the proverbial flip of a coin.
There’s at least one poker series that fits the poker player’s budget and tastes. And if travelling to a poker series is a task, online poker is now fast-rising as an option that allows a poker player to access their favourite poker game from the security and comforts of their home. So, be safe, play safe.
Live poker and gambling are illegal in several states in India, and the authorities routinely crack down on errant individuals who make the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The safest way to enjoy poker in India is to travel to Goa to play live series or play online poker.
