The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) which conducts horse races in Mumbai and Pune has now started taking online bets on horse races on Paytm First Games. After remaining shut for eight months due to the pandemic, the RWITC resumed horse-racing on 27 November.
Since 10 January, people in Mumbai have been allowed to place bets on horse races using the Paytm First Games application. Maharashtra state government permitted the RWITC to conduct online betting on races in Mumbai and Pune on 7 January. In compliance with the law, only residents of Maharashtra can place bets on the RWITC races using the Paytm First Games application.
Paytm First Games will prompt for user’s location in the phone to see to it that there is no violation of the law. Zavaray Poonawalla, chairman of RWITC said, “For the club, it was a historical accomplishment and I believe that online betting is a huge lifeline for horse racing. People can also log on to www.rwitc.com and watch the live stream of races.” Member of the managing committee and chairman of stewards at RWITC, Milan Luthria said, “Paytm First Games will be our online betting and live streaming partner.”
Paytm First Games offers betting for the races taking place on the Hyderabad Race Club as well, but only residents of Telangana are allowed to place their bets. In the month of December, the Karnataka state government withdrew the permission that it had given to the Bangalore Turf Club for online betting.
In the year 1966, the Supreme Court declared that betting on horse races was not a game of chance but a game of skill. According to Indian law, recognizing a game as gaming/gambling or game of skill is entirely state-specific.
