Nishant Sharma Brings Home Title in Poker Dream 11 Main Event

Poker Dream 11 concluded with its Main Event wrapping up in Malaysia, and one of our leading Indian poker players, Nishant Sharma, has carved his name in this event’s history with his win, bagging the Main Event of this Asian live poker series twice in a row.

He shipped the main event, cashing for nearly a career-best score of MYR 811,629 (~₹1.53 Cr) out of the total prize pool of MYR 6,807,305. Last year, Sharma conquered the Main Event at Poker Dream 10 Vietnam with a phenomenal N₫ 3.757 Billion (~₹1.23 Cr) payday and he proved that he wasn’t a one-time wonder, returning to defend his title successfully.

Coming to Event #18 MYR 4,800 Main Event, the tournament saw a whopping field of 2,013 entries. Out of that, 227 players were paid out, with the min-cash being MYR 3,850. Two Indians ended up on the Main Event final table, including Sharma and Harsh Dembla, the latter finishing in 5th spot for a handsome payout of MYR 254,700 (~₹48 Lakh).

Sharma is a pretty famous poker player based in India. His best live cash at the time of writing this article is $230,475 (~1.58 Cr) at the WSOP 2018 Main Event. He is 11th on the India All-Time Money List. According to HendonMob, Sharma’s poker tournament journey began in 2017 when he placed 29th at the Main Event of the Deltin Poker Tournament, ₹35,000 No Limit Hold’em, and took home ₹63,000.

Poker fans are wondering whether Sharma will be able to pull off a hat-trick of winning main events and create a trilogy of sorts. Poker Dream 12 is all set to commence in Jeju from 26th September to 6th August 2024 at Shinhwa World. The tournament has the biggest GTD prize pool ever for Jeju, KRW 2.8 billion ($2 Million)

Nishant Sharma’s win is a boost for the Indian poker scene

Indians are winning big on international poker platforms, which is bringing more credibility to the real-money gaming and poker sector in India. Several mainstream celebs are now endorsing popular poker apps in India. Every big win—like the one Nishant Sharma pulled off—is good news for the poker player and the Indian market. Also, Indian audiences have welcomed the first poker-themed reality show, Poker Master Class, on JioCinema, which featured the who’s who of the Indian poker scene mentoring other poker players.

The team included Shravan Chhabria, Abhishek Goindi, Vinod Megalmani, and Kanishka Samant. Poker has a sketchy presence in India, with several states outright banning live poker, but others like Goa and Sikkim host poker tournaments. It remains to be seen how and when India will take their next step in embracing poker as the true game of skill that it is.

Gutshot Magazine congratulates Nishant and wishes him all the best for his future at the felt.
