MPN to cease global online poker operations

Microgaming Poker Network (MPN) is all set to call it quits after 16 years of providing online poker solutions to clients. The Isle of Man-based iGaming software supplier yesterday announced its intention to shut down online poker operations within the next 6-8 months. It’s estimated that the closure will happen by Q2 or Q3 of 2020.

There have been rumours about the closure since a few weeks now, but it was confirmed after the supplier started sending out an email to its customers. There was speculation on the Two Plus Two forums but Alex Scott, Managing Director of MPN promised to clear it out with an official statement.

The statement was released earlier today by MPN, saying:

“The decision follows an extensive internal review of the software supplier’s product portfolio and strategy, signalling the end of an award-winning network that has provided online poker players with unique and entertaining gaming experiences for more than 16 years. In the run-up to the network closure, which will be fully detailed on the MPN blog in the coming weeks, access to online tournaments, promotions and cash games will remain available to players.”

Quite a few major online poker brands have been operating on the MPN network including Grosvenor Poker, paf, CoolBet, betsafe, Betsson, 32 Red, NordicBet, OlyBet, and a few others. RedKings Poker was another major brand that was on the MPN network until April this year while Unibet was also a part of MPN until 2014.

In India too, quite a few brands like Thrill Poker, PokerYaar, PokerNation and PokerLion were on the MPN network but most of them shut down, while PokerLion shifted to another platform. Microgaming also hosts a live poker tour from time to time and the future of that tour is also uncertain now.

John Coleman, CEO of Microgaming, also commented on this development, saying, “The network model no longer fits with our strategic vision for poker, and this is the right time to announce the closure as we focus on redistributing key resources and personnel across the business. While the network will be closing, this is not the end for poker at Microgaming, which is driven to create the most enjoyable entertainment experiences, leading the way with world-class gaming content. Ultimately, this move will help the business to achieve that vision as we follow a new strategic direction for the vertical, details of which will be revealed in due course.”
