Maharashtra Government To Allow Casinos In The State?
As per the latest news reports, Maharashtra government has decided to allow casinos to operate in the state. In the context of the recent GST implementation of 28% tax on casinos, horse racing and online gaming. The Maharashtra government believes that allowing casinos in the state will boost revenue numbers and the tourist footfall will also see a boost.
As per media reports, Maharashtra government will present a bill in the upcoming Monsoon session of the parliament. This bill could soon be implemented as the authorities have received many requests from businessmen requesting casinos be allowed in the state.
News reports also reveal that the Maharashtra state government wants to allow casinos to operate under the 28% GST rule at tourist places to boost revenue collected from taxes.

The General Secretary of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS), Manoj Chavan had reportedly discussed the subject of casino related laws in the state. Chavan had reportedly mentioned that casinos will pull in a revenue of $1.1 Billion to the state, and how the state government stands to get more than $300 Million in GST.
The Maharashtra Casinos (Control and Taxation) Act was in place since 1976 but it was never implemented. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed back in 2015 by Jay Sayta pointing clearly at the economic benefits of legalising casinos in Maharashtra.
Sayta, in his PIL, reportedly mentioned that, “The Casinos Act will help eliminate the financial woes of the government as the government will raise thousands of crores in revenues.”
The gaming and technology lawyer also added that legalising casinos could eliminate illegal casinos in the state. The Casinos Act will also push tourism in the state.
It remains to be seen if the parliament pushes the bill allowing casinos to operate in the state. Many operators in the real money gaming industry are requesting the government to rethink the 28% GST as it could negatively impact the industry.
