Macau Records GRR Of MOP $3.67 Billion Worst Since Sep 2020

Macau recently announced that it has recorded a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of Macanese Pataca (MOP$) of 3.67 billion (US $459 million) in the month of March. According to the information recorded by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), the March revenue is down by 55.8% year-on-year. Additionally, this figure is also 53.7% lower than Macau’s February GGR according to information from DICJ.

The figures also indicate that the March GGR is the worst in 18 months. The last time Macau generated a lower GGR was in September 2020, when the figure stood at MOP$2.21 billion (US $274 million), which was 85.8% lower than the March 2019 when the figure stood at MOP$25.84 billion (US $3.20 billion).

Macau’s gaming revenue was badly hit by the COVID-19 outbreaks across mainland China which includes Zhuhai and Shenzhen. A week-long lockdown was observed in mid-month in Shenzhen.

GGR was down by 24.8% year-on-year to MOP$17.77 billion (US $2.19 billion) for the first three months of 2022 combined. DICJ had previously recorded a GGR of MOP$86.86 billion (US $10.76 billion) during the financial year 2021, which was a 43.7% increase over the 2020 period.

Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Center has decreased the validation period of mandatory COVID-19 virus test results from 48 hours to 24 hours for those entering Macau from Zhuhai.
