Land-based Casinos in UK prepare to reopen on 4 July

The United Kingdom’s Betting and Gambling Council (BGC) has published new guidelines to open doors of 148 casinos in the country by the next month. After months of closure to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the land-based casinos in UK are about to start operating from 4 July.

With certain lockdown relaxations in England, the government last month announced hospitality and leisure facilities could reopen from 4 July as a part of the third and final phase of its reopening plan. The American Independence Day could be a good one for casino lovers in UK now!

Every casino in the country has been closed since 23 March as part of the national effort to tackle the spread of COVID-19. Just as the casinos around the world taking strict measures for the safety of employees and visitors, UK casinos will also abide by social distancing and hygiene measures. Ultimately, businesses aren’t going to stay shut forever!

BGC’s Chief Executive, Michael Dugher, said, “Nothing is more important to the casino sector than the safety of staff and customers. I know that the casino operators have been working tirelessly to ensure that when they do reopen for business again, every possible measure will be in place to ensure the health and safety of everyone who enters the premises – from the availability of hand sanitisers and protective equipment to adherence to the latest Government current social distancing rules.”

Social distancing involves a 2-meter distance from the next person while playing at tables, standing in queues inside or outside the casino. Hand sanitizers are to be used by employees and patrons while entering and leaving the venue. Standard table games are will be limited to not more than 3 players. Gaming machines will be cleaned after each play session with ATMs being sanitized hourly. There’s also a floor plan which will help in maintaining distance and the use of plexiglass screens.

Dugher further added, “Casinos make a significant contribution to the economy, including through taxation and employment, as part of the leisure, hospitality, entertainment and tourism sectors. They have also played a hugely important role, not just in the national effort to combat COVID-19 by keeping their doors shut since March, but also through their support for communities – for example with the provision of food from their kitchens and the use of their venues. It is welcome that they are in line to reopen again from 4 July, but the message to government now is that they are ready, willing and able to open safely.”
