Journalist Beaten In Assam For Reporting Illegal Gambling


In an extremely shocking case journalist Milan Mahanta was tied to an electric pole and brutally beaten in broad daylight for reporting on illegal gambling activities. The incident took place in Mirza Teeniali, a town located in the Kamrup district of Assam this Sunday.

According to the victim, he was on his way to a meeting and had stopped at a paan shop. It was from here that a group of seven men dragged, thrashed and tied him with cables to an electric pole. Milan worked as a journalist for the local Assam newspaper Asomiya Pratidin and had recently reported various illegal gambling and land-grabbing activities. This had angered a local goon which led to the reported attack. The image of the incident went viral on social media sparking an uproar, with many concerned for the man’s life and well-being. Ironically, this incident took place on a Sunday which was also National Press Day. Many raised their voices and demanded that the attackers be caught and punished in the earliest. Even the local residents of Mirza protested and condemned the act.

Milan has filed an FIR and a case has been registered against the culprits under various sections of the IPC. One of the assailants by the name of Diganta Das has already been caught, while the others are reported to be on the run. This incident also comes just days after Parag Bhuyan, another journalist in Assam was run over by a speeding vehicle near his home in Tinsukia district. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Parthasarathi Mahanta, the superintendent of police, Kamrup district have both expressed that they will make sure the culprits will be caught and punished as per the law.
