The game of poker is gaining popularity worldwide, and several geographic locations have the potential to be some of the hottest venues for hosting the biggest poker tournament series. Several questions surround the game, from its legality in countries to strategies that increase the chance of winning.
Since poker is a card game at its basic level, one question that routinely arises is poker haram? This article discusses the answer to that question.
To know whether poker is haram or halal, we should first fully understand the concept of haram in Islam. Under Sharia law, haram is anything forbidden and sacred, and there are several activities, including disrespecting one’s parents, consuming alcohol and certain foods, like pork and a multitude of crimes, including thievery and, of course, murder.
Before we can conclude with a definitive answer to whether playing poker is haram in islam, several aspects must be considered. First, in Islam, any game played for money is considered haram. So, if poker has a financial component, it is haram to play poker. So, right off the bat, poker, if played with a financial component to it, is haram.
Secondly, even if poker doesn’t have a financial component, it is still considered haram because, according to some scholars, its strategy involves conjecture and guesswork, similar to dice games, which are also haram in Islam. Some scholars also believe that playing card games may distract from prayer and remembering Allah.

Some popular poker players from the Middle East do not necessarily follow Islam. One of them is Eli Elezra, a Jewish poker player from Jerusalem who now lives in LA. He is one of the most famous poker players and has won a staggering five WSOP bracelets. Then there is the Iranian-American Antonio Esfandiari, one of the most popular poker players in the world.
People in Saudi Arabia who wish to play poker, whether Muslims or not, have very limited options. Currently, the only way to play online poker is to sign up with a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
The concept of the game being haram is still fresh, and Saudi Arabia doesn’t allow it, whether live or online. However, the neighbouring UAE recently granted Wynn Resorts its first gambling licence, the region’s first. The UAE also formed a gaming body in 2023. This has raised questions about whether card games will be considered legitimate in Saudi Arabia, too. However, there is little chance of that happening, as some religious leaders have issued a fatwa against card games, including poker.
