Poker is one of the most popular card games, and its popularity is only rising. Today, poker players have several options for playing their favourite game – poker – including online and live poker games. Due to this, the question has increased in its gravity, as the more options, the more the chance that a person might spend an unhealthy amount of time playing the game.
In this article, we discuss the question that every poker fan and player has asked at least once in their life: Is poker addictive? To answer this question, we should first determine what factors in a person’s gaming experience can create an addiction.
Winning is addictive for obvious reasons. Winning is a bit complex, as is poker. For example, while one person ‘ships’ a poker event and takes the highest amount of the prize pool, several other poker players are ‘in the money’ and get smaller amounts. These amounts are almost always more than that single, particular buy-in,
The thrill of winning can make poker addictive, and there are several reasons why a person might end up winning. One main reason is playing consistently with weaker or the same opponents, which will make them win. While playing with the same opponents might become monotonous, the cash component involved could make the person addicted to poker.
Every sport has a thrill component, which makes it addictive. In poker or any card game, that thrill could come from a player almost winning. So, a player could have experienced being ‘in the money’ several times or even being very close to making that hallowed list. This will create a scenario where the player craves the final win and experiences ranking the highest in a poker game’s winning list.
Poker fans play online or at live games, and while both these experiences are exceptional, playing at a live table requires some effort—including making travel itineraries and arrangements. If it is very easy for a person to access a game of poker, they might become addicted to the very aspect of being at the felts—whether they win or lose is a secondary matter.
Poker players have different lifestyles, and even if one particular player is interested in one game, another might interest them more, and they might decide to spend more time pursuing that game. It also depends on external factors, like whether a person can spend so much time and money on poker that they become addicted to it.

These are some of the common aspects that might create a ‘streak’ for a poker player and could create a scenario where they are addicted to the game. Being addicted to anything, whether it is a game or a habit, could be detrimental to any individual. So, it is of utmost importance that the person wrangles themselves away from the addiction.
