The Prime Minister spoke to Rani Rampal and the team’s coach after the women’s hockey team lost to Argentina in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. He said that he is proud of the players and wished them all the best for their future. He said that all the players have tremendous skill and they performed with great hard work and now they should look ahead.
The Prime Minister said that defeat and victory are part of life and sportspersons should not break their hearts. He tweeted, “The Tokyo Olympics will be remembered for the great performance of our hockey teams.
Today and throughout the Games, our hockey team played with perseverance and tremendous skill. Proud of the team. Best wishes for the upcoming games and future. “It is noteworthy that the women’s hockey team went down 1-2 in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics hockey competition on Wednesday despite taking the lead against Argentina and will now play the team of Great Britain for the bronze medal.
India’s women’s hockey team has also not been able to progress beyond the semi-finals. They have lost 1-2 at the hands of Argentina. India women’s hockey team will now play for the bronze medal. The men’s team also lost the semi-final match before the women’s team. India scored the opening goal in the semi-final match. In the second minute of the match, Gurjit Kaur scored a goal to give India the lead.
Argentina levelled the score by scoring a penalty corner in the third minute of the second quarter. In the third quarter, Argentina went 2–1 ahead of another penalty corner. Losing the semi-final match, the Indian women’s hockey team is undoubtedly out of the race to win the gold and silver medals, but the hope of winning the bronze medal is still alive. The women’s hockey bronze medal match between India and Great Britain will be played on August 6. The team that wins this match will finish the podium.
As soon as the match was over, PM Narendra Modi tweeted encouraging Team India. Asking the women’s team not to be disappointed, she wrote, “One thing we will remember at Tokyo 2020 is the great performance of our hockey teams. Through the game, our women’s hockey team displayed unmatched patience and superb skill. Proud of the team. Best wishes for the game ahead and future endeavours.
Later, the Prime Minister spoke to Indian hockey team captain Rani Rampal and coach S Marijne and said that they were proud of the performance of the women’s team. The Indian women’s hockey team’s dream of winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics was shattered with a 1-2 semi-final loss to Argentina, which will now play for the bronze. On August 6, India will face Britain for the bronze medal.
