We often talk about how India as a market is lacking the necessary poker content the way we find documentaries, movies, interviews, podcasts, live streams and more in Western countries. However, the landscape is slowly changing in India, too, with plenty in the pipeline, like this new project called ‘POKERSTAR‘, which is set for a release in the latter part of 2025.
Creator Akash Pritam Saikia recently posted about it on his social media with the caption “Unveiling POKERSTAR.” The movie is being made in collaboration with Aces Production and Gutshot Magazine and will be streamed on YouTube globally.

Bollywood has rarely ventured into the world of card games and casinos, but when it has, it has created some iconic scenes. Dev Anand’s song ‘Tadbeer se big hui taqdeer bana le’, from ‘Gambler’ (1951), still makes crime noir fans’ hearts skip a beat every time it plays on the radio or on playlists.
That’s unlike Hollywood, which at least has some poker-themed content. Not to mention that one of the most iconic fictional characters, James Bond, still has his entry in a casino, faithfully replicated in the original movies Casino Royale (1967) and (2016). The idea that an Indian creator is making a poker-themed movie is fascinating, to say the least.
Even in the 1970s, the protagonist found himself in casinos, beating the odds, both literally and figuratively, like Amitabh Bachchan’s Jay did in The Great Gambler (1979). That movie didn’t do too well at the box office, but it is fascinating to think how many inspired movies we would have about gambling and casinos if it had worked well. Unfortunately, once the 1980s arrived, casinos were replaced by matka and illegal gambling dens in screenplays, and felts almost disappeared, appearing only sporadically in movies like the cult crime comedy 99 (2019)
Akash Pritam Saikia is an active poker player who goes by the name ‘thenotoriouspoker’ online. Born in Assam, he is an alumnus of Vellore Institute of Technology and now ventured into film-making. Prior to ‘POKERSTAR’, he created an Assamese short film called ‘MOVE ON’, which got 1.2+ million views on YouTube. See below:
Even today, there’s a dearth of ‘current’ content that’s poker-related. Only recently, Pokerbaazi released The Circuit Season 1, in which some of the most popular poker players battle it out for glory. The English film by Akash Pritam Saikia is an exciting prospect, and we at Gutshot Magazine will give the makers our complete support to make it a bashing success.
The shooting hasn’t started yet, as the team is currently finalizing the cast and also working on songs that will be recorded in January. We contacted Saikia to get some more details about what to expect from this movie. He said, “We’re so thrilled about this project. As a poker player myself, it has always been my dream since watching ‘Rounders’. We feel like poker is booming at the moment, and it’s the right time to bring some poker-related content. We’re also happy to partner with Gutshot Magazine for this project.”
Gutshot Magazine has joined hands with Aces Production and Akash Saikia as an official partner for the film. For all updates on POKERSTAR and everything else related to poker in India, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com.
