Twitch Adds 350 New Tags For Its Streamers Including Transgender & Bisexual

One of the world’s largest video streaming platforms Twitch has included the transgender label in their videos. This is believed to be a company that will aid inclusion among its 30 million daily gamers.

Other than this, Twitch also lets users tag themselves as ‘transgender,’ ‘bisexual,’ and ‘differently abled’ tag apart from the 350 new labels which are now in place. As per a blog by this Twitch reads, “This has been one of the most popular requests we have heard and the truth is that we should have done this sooner. We intentionally designed the tag systems for creators to be able to describe what they are streaming and not who they were or what they stood for.”

Further, the blog post read, “We have maintained this distinction since that time and we were wrong. The Twitch community is incredibly diverse and our tags should also reflect and celebrate that.” Starting next week, the platform will have 350 new community tags. The platform thanks its trans community that pushed for a transgender tag.

Tech firms across the globe have come under pressure to make their products more inclusive of transgenders. Platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn already allow users to add pronouns like ‘they/them’ to their profiles.

A broadcaster on Twitch, named Casey who goes by the username of CaseyExplosion says, “Adding the trans tag makes it very easy for us to find each other and to connect instantly with each other. That is something very vital because in a lot of gaming spaces if you are an LGBT, there is a sort of unspoken, don’t ask, don’t tell notion.”

Another Twitch streamer named Laura Dale, who streams Pokemon and Zelda games and goes by the username ‘LauraKBuzz’ said, “LGBT is a broad range of identities.” According to Twitch Tracker, about 70% of its users are between the age group of 13 to 34. The people in this age group collectively watch around 68-73 million hours of gameplay every day.
