Six people were arrested after an online matka gambling racket operating from Sus Gaon on the outskirts of Pune city was busted by police on Saturday afternoon.
The Pimpri Chinchwad police received a tip about the illegal activity and proceeded to conduct a raid at 3pm on Saturday (5 December). The suspects were reported to be sitting in a car while one person was dealing with the gamblers some distance away from the vehicle, according to police reports.
Popular in Maharashtra, Satta Matka is a form of lottery which is based upon the random selection of a number by the person participating in the lottery. The winner of the lottery is the person who guesses the correct number, the person is then rewarded with a predetermined amount of money.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects received bets from customers, and in turn conveyed those bets to the owner of the matka ring through an online messaging application. It was reported that the owner had been operating from a nearby place and was taking out the draw at a particular time during the day. The money transactions were suspected to have been made through online transfer applications or other mediums which are currently being investigated.
The police informed that they have now booked six people connected to the gambling ring. The following are those who have been booked and arrested: Bhimashankar Chandode (42), Navnath Sonavane (36), and Kachru Kamble (32). Those yet to be arrested are Jaysing Chandere, Gopal Chandere, and Devshalini Chadode.
According to the Pune police officials, Devshalini Chandode destroyed the phone which the suspects were using to take the bets, at the time of the raid. The suspects have now been booked under the Indian Penal Code section 204 for destruction of evidence along with the appropriate section of the Bombay Gambling Act. A first information report (FIR) in the case has been registered by Constable N V Parale and the investigation is being conducted by Assistant Inspector Rajebhosale.
