Exclusive: Mohit Bhati REVEALS How He Broke The IOPC Chip Lead Jinx Like A Pro

The 11th edition of India Online Poker Championship (IOPC) was a historic event. The tournament series witnessed some unbelievable moments, unexpected victories and a lot of action on the virtual felts. 

Mohit Bhati aka ‘jacktheripper,’ clinched the Highroller title with his outstanding poker skills. Bhati became the first ever chip leader to win the tournament at IOPC July 2021. Not only did Bhati defy the odds, he did so by defeating some of the top pros in the country like Anuj Yadav, Avadh Shah, Ankit Khattar, Sanat Mehrotra and Nitin Arora. Bhati gets candid about breaking the IOPC chip lead jinx by becoming the first chip leader to nail the final table.

What was the feeling like when you won the IOPC Highroller?

Thank you. It felt great and the win was very satisfying.

You broke the jinx of the chip leader not being able to ship a tournament. Tell us a little more about it. 

 I guess it’s the beginning of chip leader winning all the way. (Laughs)

What were some of your takeaways after playing on the FT alongside Anuj Yadav, Nitin Arora, Sanat Mehrotra and others? 

Yes, the table had some of the best and consistent players in poker. It was a good experience and I got to learn a bit from them.

How do you describe IOPC? What is different in IOPC tournaments as compared to others?

IOPC in particular gets the best players in poker from across the country. And Spartan Poker is among the best. It is a great platform for players like us.

Did you feel threatened by any particular player on the FT?

Yes, I was worried about Anuj Yadav in particular. He has been doing exceptionally well and I was worried about playing hands with him. 

Share a few experiences of playing on the final table of a marquee tournament? 

The event gave me an adrenaline rush along with some anxious moments, but it was very satisfying once I nailed it.

Two players who were your biggest competitors on the FT? 

Anuj Yadav and Avadh Shah in particular; I was a bit worried about playing hands with them.

Whom do you admire the most from the Indian poker circuit? Why? 

I have few friends, would not name one in particular. I might offend others. But yes definitely Indian players are making a mark in the international circuit as well and not to forget the female players. They are also doing well in poker and making a headway in the poker circuit. I’m proud of each of them.

Were there any particular reasons why you chose the username ‘jacktheripper’?

I chose this nickname to rip apart the chips on the table. (Laughs)

What does IOPC mean to you? 

Kudos to Spartan Poker again for all the fabulous stuff they are doing to promote poker as a skill-based sport in the right way. Cheers to the Spartan Poker team.

As a poker player, where do you see yourself five years down the line?

I hope to win a WSOP title in the near future. But yes, I definitely want to get better at my game. Improving at my game and beating the best of players on the felts. This is where I would love to see myself in a few years down the line.

Other than poker, which other mind game do you play? 

Other than poker I love playing chess and cricket.
