League of Legends (LoL) is one of the top games in Esports in the world and is played by millions all over the globe. Since its release in 2009, LoL became more popular with gamers. In 2011, Riot Games announced the first League of Legends World Championship (Worlds), where teams from across the world could compete for the champion’s title, the Summoner’s Cup, and a multi-million-dollar prize.
Over the years, the opening ceremony for the Worlds gained tremendous popularity with gamers and non-gamers alike. Making it one of the most watched Esports event. Let’s look at some of the best openings LoL has managed to give its fans.

1. Surprise performance by Imagine Dragons – 2014

The 2014 League of Legends World Championship was held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. The 2014 opening ceremony was infused with Korean culture, music and had over 40,000 fans in attendance. Imagine Dragons, one of the popular bands in America, made a surprise entrance and performed their song ‘Warriors.’ This set the stage for all the upcoming opening ceremonies.

2. Faker goes on a roll – 2015

Held in Berlin, Germany, the 2015 ceremony was known for its dazzling display of visuals. The stage was flooded with the game’s history and included an animated opening which featured players from the final team. One highlight of the event was an unexpected roll by ‘Faker’, one of the most popular players of the game, which made the crowd applaud like thunder.

3. Dragons never die – 2017

With each opening ceremony becoming even more popular than the last, the 2017 one held in Beijing, China is one of the most memorable one. In the middle of Against The Current’s performance of ‘Legends Never Die’ a huge holographic dragon was projected flying across the stadium making many attendees gasp in excitement.

4. K/DA Makes Their Debut – 2018

Before the 2018 finals, Riot Games developed K/DA, a virtual girl group consisting of four themed versions of League of Legends characters: Ahri, Akali, Evelynn and Kai’Sa. Voiced mainly by real-life singers like Madison Bear, Jaira Burns, and Miyeon and Soyeon of (G)I-dle, the group became an instant success. The 2018 opening held in Seoul featured an augmented reality live performance of K/DA’s first song, ‘Pop/Stars’ alongside their live counterparts. The catchy tune and mind-blowing technology puts the 2018 ceremony as one of the best ceremonies.
