Epic Games Won’t Allow Fortnite on Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud

An executive from Epic Games Inc. says the firm will not allow Fortnite on Microsoft’s Xbox cloud. It was actually revealed in a deposition filed by Epic Games that was made public as a part of the Epic-Apple trial to be held early next month. Epic said it is deliberately holding back the game because it views Microsoft as a competition to its PC offerings.

Epic’s Vice President of business development, Joe Kreiner, confirmed that not allowing Fortnite on Xbox cloud was Epic’s deliberate choice. He also confirmed in the deposition that the developing company views Microsoft’s Xbox services as a competition to their PC offerings.

Fortnite is currently free-to-play on Xbox and there is only one way to access the game on iPhone and that is through Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming offering. Last year, Epic Games had partnered with Nvidia to launch Fortnite on its GeForce cloud gaming service. The Fortnite developer also helped Nvidia offer various other games from its PC store on the latters cloud gaming service.

It’s to be noted that all the revenue generated from the original game’s purchase or in-app purchases from Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming goes directly to Epic rather than Nvidia. Whereas, Microsoft currently does not allow rival game stores on Xbox or the xCloud and all the transactions to the developers cannot go directly and have to go through Microsoft. This may likely be the reason why Epic prefers Nvidia over Microsoft to host Fortnite on the cloud.

The Epic-Apple trial also revolves around the App store. Epic says that the iPhone manufacturer should allow rival app stores on its devices or payment processing platforms. Apple currently follows a 30% cut for subscriptions and in-app purchases and it has currently removed Fortnite from its App store. Epic is trying to fight these policies. Kreiner’s confirmation was also a part of the lawsuit. The case has already been making headlines because it highlights the practices in the gaming industry.
