He won the one-mile event at the 1950 Texas Interscholastic Track Meet with a time of 4:43 and received many scholarships and offers from several universities. Interestingly, he was even recruited by the National Basketball Association (NBA) team Minneapolis Lakers. However, a knee injury shattered his dreams of becoming a professional basketball player.

The injury was so severe that he occasionally required a crutch to even walk. Nonetheless, in 1954 Brunson obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in administrative education the following year. After that, he worked as a school principal.

Brunson played five-card draw poker before his injury. However, after his injury, he started playing more often, so much so that his winnings paid for his expenses. After graduating, he started working as a business machine salesman. On his first day at the job, he was invited to play in a seven-card stud game wherein he won more than a month’s salary. Soon after, he quit his job and became a professional poker player.

Doyle Brunson Cancer

Brunson married his wife, Louise, in August 1962. Soon after she was pregnant with their first child, Brunson was diagnosed with a tumour in his neck. When the surgeons operated on the cancer, they found that it had spread. They believed in that the operation would prolong his life enough for him to see his baby’s birth. After the operation was completed, they found no traces of the tumour, and he was completely cured. 

The surgery had removed the melanoma, a type of skin cancer, and he was subsequently declared cancer-free. However, in 2022, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, another type of skin cancer. He underwent surgery to remove the cancer, but it had spread to his lymph nodes.
