You must be familiar with poker but what is planning poker? This is a type of poker estimation technique which is consensus based and is utilized in corporate offices and other places. This technique is used to estimate the effort or size of user stories that are generated by playing poker.

Is this the silent version of poker?

You may not be entirely correct but in poker estimation technique, members of a certain group make estimations based on the face down cards that they are dealt. The cards are revealed and accordingly the estimates are discussed. Planning is involved to avoid the influence of other players. A deck of cards is used to play planning poker and each estimator/player has a deck of cards.

There are several techniques used for estimation. One team member is selected as the moderator, and then he is expected to read the description of any project and based on that the estimation is made. Each estimator selects a card and that is the value of his estimate. Once all the estimators have selected their cards, the cards are then turned and revealed simultaneously.
