One of the most heartwarming stories emerged on 11th July during the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. The guy named Gao was playing at the highly anticipated WSOP 2023 Main Event. Amid all the antics we have seen players try to pull off in these events, the Chinese national beat them all in one go. The player decided to do something which no one could think of.
Gao decided to write a letter to all the players on the table; yes, you read it right! The poker player shared a letter with all the players sitting alongside him, requesting them not to raise him on the first big blind. He requested the favor from all the players was that cashing in on the Main Event would help him get into an ‘American University’ while also allowing him to save up money for a good honeymoon with his beloved girlfriend.
An Instagram user with a handle called ‘boldpoker’ shared a screenshot of Gao’s letter with the hashtag #cash4Gao. Gao’s letter to the players on his table read:
Dear friend,
I’ve travelled all the way from China to participate in the prestigious WSOP tournament, and making it into the money circle means everything to me. Not only would a successful WSOP performance greatly boost my chances of getting into an American University, but the prize money would also be used to fulfill a dream honeymoon for my beloved girlfriend.

I come to you with a heartfelt plea. I kindly ask your support in a single request: please refrain from raising during my very first big blind. It would mean the world to me if you could grant me this small favour, allowing me to survive another crucial round. Rest assured; once I secure a place in the money circle, I will boldly go all in without any hesitation.
I cannot express enough gratitude for your understanding and kindness. As a representative of China, I wholeheartedly extend my best wishes for a stroke of luck and success in the remaining games.
Warm Regards,
GAO
The idea worked out for him, as he managed to get into the money bubble. While many see it as a kind gesture by the players on the table, many commented stating that complying with the request is a form of collusion. It remains interesting to see if the WSOP management takes note of it and what their perspective is on this incident.
