Chasing Dreams: Poornima Seetharaman On Her Game Design Endeavours


Gaming is the next big thing in this digitally fuelled world. Gaming as a profession has gained much recognition in recent times. Looking at it as a form of career, or a source that branches out and provides employment is a new phenomenon. Poornima Seetharaman is one such exceptional woman who is making headlines in the gaming world. While gaming is largely considered to be a male dominated space, Seetharaman found her niche in the industry and has been a game developer for the past 15 years.

How did the interest arise?

After graduating as an engineer from Pillai college, Navi Mumbai she ended up getting a job with a South Korean mobile development company. Her first task was to come up with a design for a 2D mobile game in a month’s time. Seetharaman took inspiration from Chris Crawford’s Game Design document. She was also provided with Dungeon and Dragons manuals which is one of the most important fantasy tabletop roleplay games. While working on this as well as other projects like them is that she understood her calling. 

She often engages in games like Age of Empires II, Warcraft III etc. She looks for inspiration in music, movies, mythology among other things.

Achievements

Today, this iron lady is the first Indian game designer to be inducted into the Women in Games, Global Hall of Fame. Starting out by working on BioShock, FarmVille, and How to Train Your Dragon franchises, she is now the lead game designer at Zynga Games.

Swadeshi Ideas

This pro game designer has set her mind on bigger things as her dream project is modern but also merges Indian culture with it. Seetharaman wishes to create an adventurous puzzle game, ‘Madhuram,’ which will be an infusion of Carnatic music with games. Through the game, the player will be taken through a journey of Navarasa.

Aiming Higher

After working for so long and understanding the nuances of gaming and the industry altogether, this professor from the National Institute of Design, Bengaluru wants to create a community for women and others. Women like her are taking inspiration from everyday life and creating impactful changes in the Indian gaming world as well as on the global front.
