One of the states in northeast India, Sikkim is the least populous and second smallest states in the country. As much as it is known for its biodiversity and third highest peaks in the world, Sikkim also has a lively casino culture.
Only three Indian states namely Goa, Daman and Sikkim have been permitted to have casinos. While Goa is known it’s nightlife and flattering casinos, Daman and Sikkim are no lesser. Sikkim is home to several casinos that are located within 10 kms of the state capital city. Sikkim’s casinos, launched in 2009, and had a surge in tourism with an estimated 12,000 tourists visiting the state per year. These are the top three prominent casinos in the state:
Delta Corp’s new casino will join Sikkim’s existing casinos—Casino Mahjong in the Mayfair resort offers about 150 gaming positions in its new gambling establishment. The casino is a 7,000 sq.ft. facility with 15 gaming tables, poker rooms with 7 tables, VVIP gaming room, slot machines in a five-star hotel near Ranipool. It offers Balckjack, Baccarat, Flush, Kitty (Russian Flush), Marriage etc.
This is the first casino in Sikkim that began in 2009 itself. Located in Hotel Royal Plaza it is a 2000 sq/ft land-based casino which has five gaming tables, 15 gaming machines, Slot machines and offers games like Blackjack, Flush etc. With the state of art facilities, this casino is said to have begun casino culture in the state.
Set at 6000 feet above sea level, Casino Deltin Denzong in Gangtok offers a different gaming experience against the backdrop Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. It offers all casino games like Blackjack, Roulette, Poker, Teen Patti and many more.
The Delta Corp, one of India’s leading company that invests in the casino industry has also invested in the casinos at Sikkim. The hospitality company partnered with Hotel Welcome Heritage Denzong Regency for the Sikkim venture. Under the partnership, the hotel will lease the gaming space to Delta Corp, which, in turn, was supposed to “responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the new casino.”
The local Sikkimese are not allowed to enter the casinos. In 2016, the State government amended the Sikkim Casinos (Control & Tax) Rules to ban residents from playing. While local sikkimese are not allowed, Mayfair’s website mentions that Resident Entry Charges in Casino is Rs 1500 + GST. For more updates about casinos across India, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com
