Coronavirus has given a major jolt to industries across the world a set back from planned events, activities and poker tournaments too. In the past few months, a chain of poker events and matches have been cancelled or postponed in order to ensure the safety of the people.
The Asian Poker Tour (APT) announced on Monday the cancellation of the Poker Tour scheduled between 8 September to 21 September in Manila, Philippines because of Covid-19 and the travel restrictions due to it.

The event was supposed to take place at Newport Grand Wing, Resorts World Manila. The brand has been organising a number of online events after being forced to cancel some in-person Asia-Pacific tournaments due to the coronavirus alert across the region. Resorts World Manila, being one of the poker promoters said, “Updates on the upcoming APT events will be posted on their website and our official Facebook page as soon as available. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 and travel restrictions, the APT Philippines will be rescheduled.”
The Covid-19 lockdown status in Metro Manila area eased back to general community quarantine, with effect from August 19. The Metro Manila area encompasses Philippine’s capital large-scale casino resorts. Casino complexes in the Metro Manila area have been closed since mid-March due to the pandemic induced lockdown.
It is still unclear if casino operations at Metro Manila would be resumed following the latest easing of lockdown conditions there. During the second quarter of lockdown, ‘Dry runs’ of casinos were permitted since they generated the equivalent of millions of U.S. dollars, during the general community quarantine period. According to financial results filed by Solaire Resort and Casino, City of Dreams Manila, and Resorts World Manila casino complexes, such dry runs are required to be functional for the economy.
Asian Poker Tour is a global poker tournament that takes place in multiple countries, attracting some of the biggest gamers globally. The incompetence of the travel sector to cope with the lockdown situation, along with the restrictions imposed by the authorities on international traveling, has churned the gambling business. Though major casino establishments resumed their operations, the reality is far from normal. The cancellation of ATP Philippines is a big turnoff for the poker industry.
