Ahmedabad turns into a hotspot for gambling activities

Gambling activities have been on a surge in the city of Ahmedabad since the last few days. The Bopal police were on a patrol duty in the wee hours of Friday when the officials received a tip off about gambling activities at a house in Suncity near Sobo centre in south Bopal area of Ahmedabad. Based on the tip-off, the police reached Suncity and raided the house.  A total of six people were booked for involving in gambling, among them, the owner of the house was also arrested. The six people booked were identified as Vivek Thakkar, owner of the house, Hiren Thakkar and Jayesh Thakkar, both residents of Bopal, Nikol resident Krunal Thakkar and Surat residents Vivek Unadkat and Rajesh Agravat. INR 22,000  and other items were seized from the house and all of them have been booked under the Public Gambling Act of 1867, that prohibits running or being in charge of a public gambling house.

Ahmedabad turns into a hotspot for gambling activities

This is yet another case when gambling activities have taken place at the same location of Ahmedabad. Just ten days ago, the Bopal police had busted two more gambling dens and arrested multiple people. The police had received a tip-off on 1 August about a few people who were involved in gambling at an open space behind Auda garden near Sobo centre in south Bopal. Seven people were arrested and INR 44,870 and other items used while gambling were seized. The other incidents that occurred in the recent time was on 28 July when 9 people were arrested from a house in Shela village. Among the nine people involved in gambling were six women and three men. They were booked under the Public Gambling Act and INR 33,450 was seized.

These incidents throw light on how people have been engaging in gambling activities during the pandemic. This lockdown could be the reason for increased illegal activities since many people have been unemployed, a major fallout of the current situation due to the spread of coronavirus.
