23 Persons Apprehended for Gambling Activities in Palghar

Gambling is heavily restricted in India apart from certain categories which include horse racing and lotteries. Indians have always been part of gambling, but since the 21st century, more people have been making cash bets on prohibited gambling and betting in India. Critics of gambling claim that it leads to corruption, money laundering and crime, while proponents of regulated gambling argue that it can be a huge source of revenue for the state. On Saturday, 23 people were taken into custody on gambling and related charges in Talasari.

Talasari is located in the Palghar district, the city is around 83 miles north of the major city Mumbai, India’s Green Park Resort led to the arrest of 23 persons in a raid conducted by the local police. During the raid, the officers caught the accused involved in gambling and drinking. They seized INR 73,000 in cash and liquor at the resort. According to the police reports, a total of INR 1.31 lakhs were seized at the scene. Many of the arrested were from a nearby city which is along the west coast of India, Gujarat.

According to the Superintendent of Palghar Police Dattatraya Shinde, the accused have been charged under the Bombay Prohibition Act, India’s Public Gambling Act, and other regulations. However, Shinde claims that the owner of the Green Park resort managed to escape the police and is on the run.
