Yueqi Zhu wins first WSOP gold bracelet

Chinese poker player Yueqi Zhu has a long-spanning live poker career that began 20 years ago, in 1998. He first played in the World Series of Poker way back in 1999 and after multiple final tables and several finishes in the money, he finally has a WSOP gold bracelet to his name.

He has had six finishes in the top three of WSOP events and all the perseverance has finally paid off, winning Event #35: $1,500 Mixed Omaha at the 2018 WSOP and taking home $211,781 for first place. Always a low-stakes player, this is Zhu’s second highest live cash, after $225,325 for a third-place finish in a WSOP 2010 event. His live winnings are now past the $1.5 million mark.

The tournament saw 773 entries which created a prize pool of over a million dollars and the competition was tougher than expected, with the final four players having to come back on an unofficial Day 4 to decide a winner. Female poker player Carol Fuchs was the first to bust out, while Gabriel Ramos followed soon later.

Eventually, Zhu faced USA’s James Woods in heads-up and with a 11:1 chip lead, it wasn’t long before he was crowned the winner. In the final hand, Ramos had a set of queens on the flop, but Zhu completed a King-high straight when the river card opened, and that was enough to take down the title. Ramos secured his fifth WSOP cash and a pay-check of $130k for finishing second, while Zhu crossed a massive 70 WSOP career cashes.
