WSOP 2024: Santhosh Suvarna Ends 100K HR Day 1 With 6th Highest Stack

The largest buy-in event of the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) kicked off amid high expectations with Event #47: $100,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em. Held at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, this tournament always attracts a blend of top professionals, emerging grinders, and high-stakes recreational players. Last year’s $100,000 High Roller drew 93 participants, creating a prize pool of nearly $9 million. This year, the event surpassed that number during Level 11, with 95 players registered by the end of Day 1 and more expected to join on Day 2.

Day 1 Highlights

Danish high-stakes pro Henrik Hecklen finished as the chip leader among the 44 remaining players, with a stack of 3,505,000. Other notable stacks included Omaha specialist Ben Tollerene (2,815,000), American pro Nick Petrangelo (2,700,000), and sports cards enthusiast Jared Bleznick (2,655,000), who secured a large portion of his chips by cracking aces. Reigning champion Jans Arends, seeking his third bracelet, was eliminated toward the end of the day.

Key Moments

The tournament started with just a few tables but quickly expanded. Early on, Chris Brewer won a significant pot against Adrian Mateos with two pairs. Other highlights included 2023 Main Event champion Espen Jorstad having his Kings cracked by Kahle Burns’ Jacks, and Ren Lin joking about needing a ‘new sugar mommy’ if he busted.

Fan favourite Daniel Negreanu had a rough day, first running king-jack into aces and quickly re-entering the tournament only to run into aces again, this time held by recent $50,000 High Roller champion Sergio Aido.

WSOP 2024: Phil Ivey Wins 11th Bracelet Ending 10-Year Drought

Only Indian At the $100K High Roller NLH

The only Indian pro grinding in this heavy-duty tourney is Santhosh Suvarna. He bagged the sixth highest stack of 2,135,000 chips (53 BB). It would be interesting to see how this WSOP bracelet winner spins the game when game resumes on Day 2.

Looking Ahead to Day 2

Day 2 will begin at noon local time, starting at Level 13 with blinds of 20,000/40,000/40,000. Late registration remains open until the end of Level 13, so the field is expected to grow even further.
