The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) will crown another champion on 4th July at the Horseshoe and Paris Casino Las Vegas. Only five players remain in the battle for the seven-figure top prize in Event #79: $50,000 High Roller Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO). Day 1 saw 131 entries, making a new attendance record seem unlikely. However, the final registration level brought in 56 more entries and re-entries, boosting the field to 187 entries and generating a prize pool of $8,929,250.
As midnight approached, the field was whittled down to the final five contenders from five different countries. Hong Kong’s Danny Tang topped the leaderboard with a stack of 20,725,000. Ronald Keijzer (13,275,000) and Daniel Perkusic (12,150,000) were close behind, creating a gap between them and the bottom two players. Jim Collopy (5,100,000) and India’s Santhosh Suvarna (4,850,000) are nearly even, separated by just one big blind.

Suvarna has three cashes in the ongoing series in Las Vegas, all from High Roller events. The Indian businessman won his second WSOP gold bracelet in Event #55: $250,000 Super High Roller No-Limit Hold’em, earning $5,415,152.
Tang, the chip leader, is well-versed in high-stakes competitions, having amassed over $26.9 Million in live poker earnings. Five years ago, he won his first gold bracelet in Event #90: $50,000 Final Fifty and now has the chance to double his tally. Collopy holds three WSOP titles, while PLO specialists Keijzer and Perkusic are aiming for their first victory.
The final five will resume play at 1 PM local time with 20:35 left in level 26, featuring blinds of 150,000/300,000 and a big blind ante of 300,000. Each finalist has already secured $503,085, and the winner will take home a massive $2,100,325.

The day began at a rapid pace as numerous late entrants tried to build their stacks, causing frequent changes in the leaderboard. PLO bracelet winners like Lou Garza, 2022 winner Robert Cowen, Stephen Chidwick, and Dash Dudley were eliminated early. Defending champion Jesse Lonis couldn’t run up his short stack and was out well before the money bubble. Other big names like Michael Duek, Jared Bleznick, Eelis Pärssinen, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, and Shaun Deeb also left empty-handed.
Near the money bubble, Bryce Yockey and Isaac Haxton were eliminated, with Collopy ascending the leaderboard after knocking out Haxton in a huge pot. Dylan Smith was the unfortunate bubble boy, leaving empty-handed. In-the-money eliminations included Dan Smith and Dylan Weisman, followed by PLO experts Richard Gryko and Veselin Karakitukov. Jason Mercier missed his shot at a seventh gold bracelet, and online legend Viktor “Isildur1” Blom made another deep run without a WSOP victory.
On the final three tables, Tang was a short stack but quickly doubled and tripled up. Big stacks Joshua Ladines and Christopher Frank lost momentum, with Frank and Cary Katz falling to Tang in a three-way all-in. Keijzer initially led the final table, but Tang overtook him by eliminating Ben Lamb. Perkusic knocked out Brian Rast, then Tang sent David Benyamine to the payout desk. Keijzer held with kings to eliminate Gabriel Andrade, concluding the night’s action.
Apart from Suvarna, we also have Paawan Bansal who exited at the 46th spot in the $1,000 Mini Main Event for a payday of $12,587. Other pros who cashed in this tourney are Kunal Patni (487th, $2,255) and Ankit Wadhawan (807th, $2,001).
With the coveted Main Event kicking off amid high energy, it remains interesting to see which Indians make a headway in this tournament. Last year, Anirban Das created history by registering India’s best score at the series. He finished 16th and grabbed a pay cheque of $430,200.
