When you’re Phil Hellmuth at the same table as Shaun Deeb, be prepared for some friendly ribbing, especially if you get bluffed. Deeb, known for his playful banter, won’t miss the chance to enjoy the moment at your expense.
On Saturday, Liam Black from PokerNews captured a particularly entertaining hand at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) involving the 17-time bracelet winner and Dan Smith. This moment occurred on Day 2 of Event #72: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship during the third level of the session.
The video clip began as Hellmuth mucked his cards in response to a bet from Smith. As Hellmuth threw his cards away, he disclosed a part of his hand to his rival. “I’m going to lay down a 10 to you — 10-5,” Hellmuth remarked.

In 2-7 Lowball, the objective is to form the lowest possible hand without creating a straight or pairs. Aces are considered high in this game, making 2-3-4-5-7 the best hand. An unpaired hand with an ace still ranks higher than a paired hand.
After Hellmuth folded, Smith revealed his hand. “I got dealt a seven,” Smith said, showing one seven. “And another seven, and another seven, and another seven,” further added the one-time WSOP bracelet winner.

While Hellmuth’s full hand wasn’t revealed, it was evidently better than Smith’s quads. Despite being bluffed occasionally, Hellmuth’s reaction, along with those at the table, was epic.
The dealer joined in the laughter, and Deeb, known for his teasing, clapped loudly as Smith collected the pot. Noticing the PokerNews camera, Deeb remarked, “We got good video of that, Dan, by the way,” as everyone turned toward the cameraman.
Deeb continued to needle Hellmuth, asking, “Did he overplay the 7’s, or is that acceptable?” Hellmuth responded, “I have a game plan for Dan.” “You’ve had a game plan for me for years. The money goes from you to me,” Smith quipped.

Hellmuth admitted that Smith had been getting the better of him for the past decade. For the next few minutes, the table continued to tease the Poker Brat for his fold against quads.
At the time of this event, Hellmuth had 200,000 chips, placing him in the middle of the pack with 41 of the 186 players remaining. Smith held 350,000 chips, with Deeb trailing slightly at 357,000. Poker legend Jennifer Harman led the field with 565,000 chips. The first-place prize is $411,041, with the final table scheduled for Sunday.
