The penultimate day of the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas has concluded. While several gold bracelet events took place, the focus was primarily on the record-breaking 2024 WSOP Main Event. From 10,112 entries, only nine players from six countries remained in the competition, each supported by a lively crowd. By the end of the day, three players were left standing. Jordan Griff and Niklas Astedt, who started the day with the largest stacks, maintained their positions, while Jonathan Tamayo moved from seventh in chips to nearly tying for the lead. Last year, it took 164 hands to determine a winner from the final nine. This year, 161 hands were completed to reach the final three, suggesting a potentially quick resolution in the upcoming finale.
Astedt led the eliminations with four, finishing with a stack of 223,000,000. Tamayo and Griff each eliminated one opponent, ending the day with 197,000,000 and 187,000,000 respectively. With only eight big blinds separating them, many consider Astedt, known as “Lena900” in the online poker world, the favourite. Tamayo’s supporters included 2015 WSOP Main Event champion Joe McKeehen and four-time bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche.

In an interview with PokerGO after Day 9, Astedt expressed satisfaction with his performance and humorously compared the event to a “football game,” contrasting it with online play. He plans to prepare for the final day with minimal changes to his routine.

Tamayo had a memorable double-up against Astedt with a broadway straight against a set, a moment he described as exhilarating. Reflecting on his achievement of reaching the final three, Tamayo acknowledged the rarity of his accomplishment and expressed optimism about his chances with his remaining chips. Griff, supported by friends and family, expressed gratitude for their presence and shared his excitement about the experience. He plans to get as much rest as possible before the final day.
The final day of the tournament began with 50 minutes left in the first level. The action was initially cautious, with the table short stack, Andres Gonzalez, doubling against Griff. The second level brought more drama as Griff eliminated Brian Kim and Malo Latinois in consecutive hands. Joe Serock, after slipping in the chip counts, was knocked out by Astedt’s slow-played queens. Gonzalez doubled up once more but was eventually eliminated by Astedt, followed by Boris Angelov falling to Tamayo.
Niklas Astedt, with his fourth knockout of the night, has brought us down to the final three players who will advance to tomorrow.

Astedt regained the lead with trips against Griff, and Tamayo’s chip count surged, positioning him among the leaders. Gonzalez and Angelov were subsequently eliminated, and Jason Sagle’s fate was sealed when Astedt’s Ace-Trey suited improved to a wheel, reducing the field to three.
The final trio will return at 2 PM local time on Wednesday, 17th July, 2024, to play down to a winner. With 17:40 minutes remaining in level 42 and blinds at 1,500,000/3,000,000 with a big blind ante of 3,000,000, the competition is poised for a tense and potentially prolonged conclusion, with at least $4 Million guaranteed for each player and significant pay jumps ahead.
