WSOP 2024 Highlights Day 48: Can Adrian Mateos Win Fifth Bracelet?


The 2024  World Series of Poker (WSOP) is nearing its finale at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, with only a few events left on the packed schedule. Day 48 featured eight events simultaneously; here’s a summary of the happenings on 14th July.

Event #81: $10,000 WSOP Main Event World Championship

The nine-handed final table was set, and each finalist has secured at least $1 Million, with one destined to take home an astounding $10 Million.

Event #91: $3,000 H.O.R.S.E.

Gary Bolden clinched his first WSOP title, earning $206,321 after an unscheduled fourth day and a heads-up victory over John Racener, who missed out on his second bracelet of the series and third overall.

Event #92: $50,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em

Jared Bleznick triumphed over a star-studded field to win his first bracelet and a career-best $2,037,947.

Fahredin Mustafov Aims to Deter Adrian Mateos

Adrian Mateos of Spain continues to make headlines, this time securing the second-largest stack in Event #94: $10,000 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, with 28 players vying for the $924,922 top prize and bracelet. Mateos, who has four WSOP bracelets, is a favorite after bagging 2,860,000 chips (114 big blinds) by the end of Day 2. Only Bulgaria’s Fahredin Mustafov (3,300,000) has more chips.

Chasing them are notable players like James Chen (1,895,000), Team PokerStars’ Alejandro Lococo (1,290,000), Michael Rocco (1,215,000), Sweden’s Viktor Blom (1,160,000), 2023 SCOOP Main Event winner Felipe Boianovsky (1,100,000), Alexandre Reard (1,060,000), Aram Zobian (770,000), Daniel Smiljkovic (620,000), and two-time bracelet winner Eric Baldwin (535,000). The remaining players return at 1:00 PM  local time on Day 3 to determine the champion.

Taylor Black Leads the Final 17 in $3K Mid-Stakes Championship

Taylor Black leads Event #89: $3,000 Mid-Stakes Championship with 20,725,000 chips, ahead of Adam Owen (15,175,000) and Dong Chen (10,950,000). Only two of the remaining players, including third-placed Chen and Canada’s Xing He (5,750,000), have previously won a WSOP bracelet.

Alec Torelli (7,800,000) is close to winning his first bracelet. This marks Torelli’s first in-the-money finish of the 2024 WSOP and his first since placing 11th in last year’s Main Event. The action resumes at 11:00 AM local time on 15th July.

Wheeler Aiming For 21st Cash Of The Series

Day 1B of Event #93: $777 Lucky 7’s No-Limit Hold’em saw 1,559 entrants whittled down to 77 after 22 fast-paced levels. Brazil’s Victor Dermendjian led with 2,820,000 chips, followed by Dominick Sarle (2,150,000) and Brandon Hamlet (1,975,000). Jason Wheeler, in fifth with 1,725,000 chips, is eyeing his second bracelet of the series. Wheeler has cashed 20 times in the 2024 WSOP, including a final table in the Tag Team event.

Notable players advancing from Day 1b include Jason Daly (1,770,000), Shawn Daniels (1,600,000), Dan Heimiller (1,420,000), Maurice Hawkins (1,390,000), and Dejuante Alexander (245,000). Day 1C, the final flight, begins at 10:00 AM local time on 15th July, with 22 levels of 30 minutes each. Survivors will continue at 10:00 AM local time on 16th July.

Poker Legend Jack McClelland In HOF Bounty Event

Event #95: $1,979 Poker Hall of Fame Bounty No-Limit Hold’em attracted 1,124 players, with 169 advancing to Day 2. Each living Poker Hall of Fame member had a bounty equivalent to their induction year. Jack McClelland, with a $2014 bounty, ended Day 1 with 209,000 chips, mid-pack among the remaining players. Preston McEwen (786,000) led the chip counts, followed by Luan Coelho (699,000) and Yang Lei (616,000).

Hall of Famers advancing include Erik Seidel (95,000) and Mori Eskandani (46,000), while Billy Baxter, Barbara Enright, Tom McEvoy, Eli Elezra, Johnny Chan, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, and Phil Hellmuth were eliminated. Other notable players progressing to Day 2 include Martin Finger (554,000), Adam Hendrix (320,000), Martin Jacobson (154,000), and Sean Troha (81,000). Day 2 starts at 12:00 PM local time on 15th July.
