WSOP 2019: Ari Engel, Luke Schwartz win maiden bracelets

Event #48: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em

“Never give up. With us huge field no limit players, you play these expecting to win one in a lifetime. It’s a relief to not mess it up, because usually, I mess it up,” said a happy Ari Engel after he shipped his first ever WSOP tournament. The Canadian player recently took down Event #48 at WSOP 2019, taking his career live winnings past $6.5 million.

He beat a total field of 996 entries in this particular tournament before emerging champion and taking away another handsome pay-cheque of $427,399. It is 15 years since Engel started playing poker and he had so many major wins except the bracelet, which is now also accomplished. Here, he beat Uruguay’s Pablo Melogno in heads-up to win the title!

Final Table Results:

  1. Ari Engel – $427,399
  2. Pablo Melogno – $264,104
  3. Wilbern Hoffman – $186,392
  4. Ben Keeline – $133,306
  5. David ‘Bakes’ Baker – $96,632
  6. James Hughes – $71,010
  7. Truyen Nguyen – $52,909
  8. Ryan Olisar – $39,980
  9. Josh Arieh – $30,643

Event #49: $10k Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw Championship

In this tournament, we had a smaller field of 100 entries obviously because of the much higher buy-in attached to it. Again though, it was a first-time WSOP winner as 35-year-old British player Luke Schwartz walked away with a maiden WSOP bracelet and of course, $273,336 in prize money.

“It feels pretty good, pretty relieving. It’s a nice thing to have as a poker player. Maybe the old me would’ve just got too frustrated and tilted but I just took a deep breath,” said Schwartz after the victory. In heads-up, he got past USA’s George Wolff after leading right from the start of the Final Table and only giving away that lead once momentarily.

Final Table Results:

  1. Luke Schwartz – $273,336
  2. George Wolff – $167,936
  3. Johannes Becker – $116,236
  4. Mark Gregorich – $81,635
  5. Yueqi Zhu – $58,547
  6. Calvin Anderson – $42,898
