WSOP (1997) Runner-Up John Strzemp II Passes Away

John Strzemp II, the poker player who once shared headlines with poker legend Stu Ungar, has passed away at 73 after a lengthy illness. While he has several achievements to his name, the spotlight shone brightest on him when he was the runner-up to Ungar in the 1997 World Series of Poker event.

In his live poker career, he has had 62 cashouts, including some at the biggest poker tournaments, including, of course, the WSOP and the World Poker Tour. His last live cashout was at The Wynn Signature Series in Las Vegas in 2022, when he placed 20th and took home $916. Throughout his career, he has had 20 cashouts in various events in the World Series of Poker.  He was one of the few poker players who were active for the decades between the 80s and 2000s.
