WinZO, the popular gaming app, has filed a complaint against Google at the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The company alleges that Google engages in practices that stifle competition and push startups out of business in India, and the CCI has ordered an investigation.
WinZO has filed a complaint highlighting Google’s dominance in the digital advertising market and the restrictive terms it imposes on app developers. According to Winzo, these practices create an uneven playing field, stifling competition and disadvantaging smaller companies. The Competition Commission of India (CCI), in its order, acknowledged a prima facie case for investigating Google’s practices concerning its online advertising services and app store policies.
WinZO is a gaming platform that offers its users several casual games, including the classic Ludo. It is available to download from the Google Play Store. Winzo offers free casual games as well as pay-to-play games. The pay-to-play component is not available for download on the Play Store. According to its website, Winzo offers around 100 casual games.
The inquiry will focus on whether Google has abused its dominant position to suppress competition and harm consumer interests. A spokesperson commented, “Google’s anticompetitive practices have significantly hindered our growth and that of numerous startups across India.”
The CCI’s investigation into Google aligns with a global wave of regulatory actions targeting major tech companies. Authorities in Europe and the United States have been scrutinizing Google’s practices, particularly in digital advertising and app distribution. The outcome of the CCI’s probe could have far-reaching effects on the tech industry in India. Google’s Android marketplace remains one of the biggest platforms for app developers to promote their apps to the common public.

This investigation may pave the way for stricter regulatory oversight and prompt changes in digital platform operational practices. The CCI’s action reflects the intensifying scrutiny faced by Google and other tech giants as regulators worldwide address concerns over potential monopolistic behaviour and unfair market practices in the digital economy.
Google has been routinely criticized for its decisions regarding gaming apps on its platform. In addition, there’s growing discontent among app developers regarding having an app approved for the Google Play Store. It remains to be seen how Google handles this one.
