The World Poker Tour (WPT) Prime Championship started on 7th December 2023 and is one of the most tracked tournaments in the poker fraternity. Taking place at Wynn Las Vegas, it boasts a $5 Million guaranteed prize pool while having a buy-in of $1,100.
As expected, players worldwide flocked to participate in the event, with the player field reaching 10,512 entrants after the registration was closed on the Day 1D session. It is now the largest field in live poker outside the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
The WPT Prime Championship 2023 prize pool has hit the $10,196,640 mark, nearly double last year’s inaugural WPT Prime Championship at Wynn, which sat at $5,267,100. The same can be said for the number of entrants, which rose from 5,430 in the 2022 edition to over 10,500 in the WPT Prime Championship 2023, making it a rousing success.

What’s more impressive about the turnout this year is the number of other competing tournaments taking place globally last December. Despite the competition from WSOP Paradise 2023 and European Poker Tour (EPT) Prague to compete for players, the Encore Ballroom was full during the starting flights.
Following the conclusion of four Day 1 sessions, Adam Thaggard finds himself with the biggest stack, having bagged a massive 1,706,000 chips on Day 1A. No one has come close to Thaggard, with Matias Gabrenja from Day 1B sitting at 1,135,000 chips, claiming the second place.
David Goodman from Day 1C has 1,309,000 chips, while Jason Moon from Day 1D has 1,267,000 chips. Overall, 11 players are all set to enter Day 2 of the event with a seven-figure stack.
Other players with large stacks include Calvin Anderson (978,000), Mike Dentale (825,000), David Jackson (818,000), and Andrew Moreno (700,000). Day 2 of the WPT Prime Championship 2023 will begin on Monday, with the field dropping till the final table, which is scheduled for Tuesday, 19th December.
The WPT Prime Championship 2023 winner will receive $1,386,280, roughly double the $712,650 that Stephen Song won this title last year. It would be interesting to see which poker player ships the coveted WPT Prime Championship title in 2023.
