The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event reached its dramatic climax with a final hand for the ages. A record-breaking field of 10,112 players began the tournament, all vying for poker glory and a life-changing $10 million first-place prize.
After weeks of intense competition, three determined finalists remained on the final day, Day 10. Niklas Astedt, a seasoned online pro known for his calculated approach, busted in 3rd place and the WSOP 2024 heads-up finalists were Jonathan Tamayo, a young player with a reputation for aggressive play, and Jordan Griff, who ended Day 8 with the chip lead at the start of the final table.
As the final hand commenced, Tamayo held a slight chip lead. The tension in the Horseshoe Las Vegas was palpable. Flickering lights reflecting off the sweat-slicked cards, the hushed whispers of the railbirds leaning in for every move. The scene was set as life-changing prize money was going to one of these players.
Tamayo peeked at his hole cards – an eight of diamonds and three of spades. Not a very strong hand, but something to work with. Griff received nine-six off suit in the Big Blind position, a starting hand that would make most players fold eventually. With the blinds at 2.5M / 5M – 5M, Tamayo raised to 12.5 Million and Griff made the call.

9-3-8 on the flop meant Griff hit a top pair but Tamayo now held two pairs – eights and threes. Griff checked, Tamayo bet 10M, Griff raised to 40M, Tamayo 3-bet to 230M, and Griff decided to make the all-in call of 230M chips with just a single pair on the board.
The crowd was thunderous as both players got up from the table in anticipation of who would be crowned the WSOP 2024 Main Event winner. Griff was behind but any 9 or 6 on the turn or river would take him ahead. An ace of clubs opened on the turn and while Tamayo strengthened his position in the lead, Tamayo got some added outs, as another Ace would also help him win.
It wasn’t to be however, as five of diamonds opened on the river and the crowd erupted in cheers, as Tamayo was crowned champion of the WSOP 2024 Main Event. He took home a whopping $10 Million cash prize, as Griff had to settle with the second-place prize of $6 Million. See the final hand here:
