Triton Poker series in Jeju postponed due to coronavirus

If you aren’t aware of the latest coronavirus outbreak across Asia as yet, you’ve clearly not been keeping yourself up to speed. The virus is spreading at lightning speed, beginning in China and now spread to quite a few other Asian countries. It’s not only affecting tourism, but quite a few other industries across the world.

The casino industry was massively hit with Macau casino stocks all falling and expected to drop even more in weeks to come. Now, the poker industry has also been impacted. Recently, we spoke about the biggest high-stakes poker brand Triton Poker announcing yet another series – its first in 2020 – in Jeju between 10-22 February 2020.

However, the series has been postponed from its original start date, with no official word out on the revised dates. Triton Poker took to its website yesterday to confirm the news, saying, “It’s with a heavy heart that we inform you of the postponement of the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series in Jeju after the World Health Organisation (WHO) called the Coronavirus outbreak a ‘Public Health Emergency’.”

They further added, “The safety of our players and support staff remains our utmost priority. Coupled with our duty to do everything we can in our power to prevent the virus from spreading, we’ve taken the difficult but correct stop of postponing the event with immediate effect.”

While there was no official date for the series to take place, Triton confirmed that an official call will be taken on 10th February. Their decision to postpone the event has given many live poker operators a lot to think about. Should there be any sort of live poker being played in Asia with such a deadly disease in the air?
