The ‘Sex’ Component Of Poker

Hahaha, that was just to lure you into reading my very first article as a guest writer at Gutshot! But jokes apart, this piece is indeed about sex and poker, of course. The world thinks of poker as mostly a man’s game. Flashes of Texan cowboys, images of beer-drinking-Sunday-poker-nights-with-the-boys, or for that matter, even your local casinos overflowing with baldies, beardies, stubbles and the occasional well-groomed men. And then, there are women.

Women like your sister-in-law or your college buddy; your dad’s friend’s daughter and your boss’s wife. Ok yes, I know, you get the gist! Everyday women, like me, are hidden in the nooks and crannies of the 21st century and all the grit and glory it has to offer.

Women, who are just as sharp and independent and skilled and able as the other sex.

Women, who are just as willing to break away from traditional taboos as they are to hang on to their already existing roles and responsibilities.

Women, who are ready to put their every last buck on the line, and handle every consequence in their stride.

Women, who are ready to crawl out of those very nooks and crannies of the 21st century and embrace everything that the big bad world of poker has to offer.

It’s going to take time. Poker in India is still at a very nascent stage. But if there is one thing I know for sure, give it ten years or may be fifteen, there are going to be just as many women playing and winning this sport, as there are men today. I, for one, took that plunge. And I’m pretty sure, I’m not the only one. Now, this is something that makes me feel happy.
