What Role Will Technology Play In The Future Of Poker?

Technology has disrupted many aspects of our daily lives in the last few years, but it may seem unlikely that the timeless game of poker is going to be affected by any of these attention-grabbing innovations. However, by digging more deeply, we can see that several types of cutting-edge technology are already changing how we play this classic card game, while others are set to follow them.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)

The use of VR and AR has allowed many types of entertainment to be delivered in a new way that blends realities. While the promise of the metaverse that made so many news headlines in the last year hasn’t become reality yet, AR and VR have already made their way into various kinds of games that can now be played in the way that suits the player.

It seems certain that we’ll be able to play VR poker easily in the near future, perhaps by taking a seat at the table in a major tournament like the WSOP remotely or joining a themed game in an exotic setting. In terms of AR, this technology is already being used to bring table games to life, so it’s easy to imagine the same technology adding an extra dimension to our favorite card game.

As for the metaverse, this is simply an immersive online universe, and it’s possible to play poker in this way already. While the number of players currently entering the metaverse to play poker is relatively low, it should become more common as the technology becomes more widely available. The recent announcement by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg that they’ll be making their operating system open-source could help to revive interest in this technology in the next couple of years.

The Blockchain

The blockchain has made a huge impact in industries as diverse as shipping, medicine, and music. In terms of poker, there have been some attempts to create platforms on the blockchain that add a peer-to-peer approach and the immutable nature of the blockchain to the game’s basic format. However, a simpler way of using blockchain technology has already been achieved.

What might that be? Well, it’s simply that you can play poker and other casino games with various forms of crypto in a Bitcoin casino. A gambling site that accepts BTC, ETH, LTC, and other tokens gives you a highly secure way of playing with real cash without any complications. Caribbean Beach Poker, Pai Gow Poker, and Casino Hold’Em are among the versions you’ll find online where cryptos can be used for deposits and withdrawals.

The speed and low cost of the transactions are a couple of the reasons why cryptos are proving increasingly popular among casino players. Since these currencies are pseudo-anonymous, they also add to the player’s privacy, with no need to link a card or e-wallet to their casino account.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Few subjects have captured the imagination of the public recently like AI has. This is something that has been the subject of a huge amount of debate, with some people believing that it’s going to make life better for everyone while others fear that it could have a negative impact on our lives. Among the most controversial advances, a group of artists has been trying to get AI to generate art based simply on reading their minds.

Poker players are unlikely to notice how AI has been slowly evolving in this industry. It’s most commonly used in areas like the way online games are run and how recommended games are suggested to players. Since computers have been beating human players at games like chess for decades, it seems obvious that AI poker bots can defeat humans too. Yet, the mixture of varied strategies, player behavior, and bluffing in the card game means that computers have struggled to consistently beat flesh and blood players.

Other Advances That Take Us By Surprise

We currently live in the fastest-changing times in human history, with new technology constantly emerging to change how we view the world. It seems entirely possible that something new and completely unexpected will arrive in the next few years that affects how we play poker, as well as other aspects of our daily lives.

Quantum computing, advanced robotics, biometrics, and neuromorphic engineering are just some of the subjects that may advance rapidly in the future. While these areas of technology aren’t focused on poker, we’ve seen in the other aspects we’ve looked at that seemingly unrelated technology can quickly filter into other parts of our lives, like gambling games.

At its heart, poker remains a simple, low-tech game we can play with friends just by dealing a pack of cards. Yet, the way that new technology is being used is opening up new ways of playing and of presenting the game that seem certain to take us into an exciting future.
