Sumit Sapra wins big in APL Vietnam High Rollers

Asia Poker League (APL) just wrapped up its APL Road Series Vol. 3 in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam. The festival was an action-packed 11-day affair, with plenty of events lined up to cater to all kinds of players.

One of the main attractions of the festival was the VND 16,500,000 Main Event with VND 8 billion GTD which was eventually crushed. The event was concluded successfully, with Vietnam’s very own Quang Nguyen shipping it and bagging around INR 49 Lakhs as first place money.

Although the Main Event had a pretty sizeable buy-in, it was still not the highest. The VND 33,000,000 High Rollers, which happened on Nov 22 and 23, was the biggest event in the series in terms of buy-in. The High Rollers attracted a total of 141 entries. But gradually the field diminished to 69 players on Day 2.

Day 2 of the High Rollers saw players playing for a gruesome 17 hours, including the final eight playing continuously for 6 hours. Usually, a day in any live series lasts about 12-13 hours, but this was something quite unexpected. Nevertheless, all the players showed much enthusiasm throughout the day, not letting petty time restrictions come in their way.

India’s Sumit Sapraa person who needs no introduction, finished third and went home with VND 849,230,000 (~INR 25.64 Lakhs), the lion’s share out of a prize pool of VND 4,103,100,000 (INR 1.23 Crores) after a three-way deal was struck. Korea’s Eunho Kwon managed to bag the trophy and VND 699,250,000 (~INR 21.11 Lakhs). The 2nd place went to Tanaka Masatoshi of VND 749,250,000 (~INR 22.62 Lakhs).

Gutshot got in touch with Sapra after his spectacular finish. About the unusual time stretch, he commented, “Well, Day 2 was pretty long and we played for more than 16 hours straight,” adding “we actually had the option to come back and play the next day once we were down to 4 players but it was so shallow that we didn’t feel like coming back the next day with 6-7 big blinds”. Therefore Sapra, Kwon and Masatoshi agreed on an ICM deal and proceeded to compete for the trophy.

“I got about VND 700 million in the deal and shoved it all in with AJ against 89 for pretty much all the chips and the title and lost that hand. So yeah, it would have been nice to win the title but nevertheless I’m pretty happy with the result and the way I played.” After winning large here, Sapra may even have plans to head to Manila for the APT Finale, which saw its inauguration today, and win big there too. Gutshot wishes him all the best for the future.

Final Table Results –

  1. Eunho Kwon – VND 699,250,000 (deal)
