Stu Ungar Net Worth

Stu Ungar was one of the most celebrated poker players and is regarded as one of the best of his time. He was active during the 1980s and 1990s and was found dead in a hotel room in 1998. Ungar has a colourful history, as did anyone who appeared at a card game in those decades. However, we try to gauge what his net worth would be at his death.

Ungar’s first known cash was in 1980 when he held 2nd rank at the $5,000 Limit 7 Card Stud at the 11th World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas and took home an eye-watering $45,000. Today, that amount would be close to $172,191  – a formidable amount by any yardstick.

This was just one of his wins at WSOP, though. That year, he shipped the $ 10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship and took home a mind-boggling $365,000. If Unger had won that today, he would be taking home a comfortable $1,396,660.

These are just some of his cash and wins at WSOP, though. His last WSOP outing was in 1997, at the 28th World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, and he shipped the $ 10,000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship and took home $1,000,000.  In 2024, the money would be $1,964,492.

Ungar has several other WSOP and poker achievements, including five WSOP bracelets. To put his achievements in perspective, Santhosh Suvarna is the only Indian player to have two WSOP bracelets – and Indians have been playing poker since the late nineties and even earlier.

He is also one of the few to have won the WSOP Main Event twice and one of the super-rare individuals to have won consecutive titles at the WSOP Main Event. It would be anyone’s guess how much Stu would have raked in if he had survived a few years more. Born in the 50s, he began his recorded poker journey in the eighties and was active for about two decades.

While we might never know his true net worth, one cannot deny that Unger is one of the true legends of the game and an inspiration to any and every poker player who wants to pursue their dream of being at the felts. To give poker players an idea of just how charismatic and successful Unger was, Binion’s Horse Shoe, the casino where Unger won a poker tournament thrice, produced collector’s edition gambling chips with Unger’s face imprinted on one side.

Unger was found dead in a Las Vegas motel, and he had numerous health issues, including colitis. It is said that his nostrils had collapsed because of excessive drug use. But beyond and before that, Ungar was one of the greatest poker players to have ever tread ground.
