Steve Smith signed by Barbados Tridents

Over the ball-tampering saga that took place a few months back, Cricket Australia handed over 12-month bans to David Warner and Steve Smith, two of Australia’s best batsmen of all-time. However, that ban wasn’t applicable to domestic tournaments outside the home nation.

Both were then signed to play in the inaugural Global T20 Canada. Warner scored 6 single-digit scores (including 2 ducks) in his 8 innings there and was clearly out of touch. However, Smith continued to show why he is one of the best in the world, scoring two fifties in Canada.

Looking at his good performance there, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will also feature the star Aussie batsman, with Barbados Tridents signing him for the upcoming season. He was signed as replacement for Shakib al Hasan, who dropped out of the tournament, with the reason for doing so still unclear. Warner however, will be out of action for a while longer.

Smith will be excited to make his CPL debut and keep scoring runs in the time that he won’t be playing cricket in Australia. He will first be seen in action on 12th August when the Tridents take on Guyana amazon Warriors on 12th August. Apart from Smith, the Tridents also announced the signing of Kiwi batsman Martin Guptill for the CPL 2018.

“It is a huge blow to lose Shakib for the tournament but in Steve Smith we have a truly world-class replacement who can help to bring power to our batting lineup. As a man who has played cricket at the highest level all over the world we are very confident that Smith will be a big success with the Tridents,” said the Tridents coach, Robin Singh.
