Star casino fined AUD 90,000 for letting 12-year-old gamble

The Star casino in Sydney has been in the news since 2019 due to the instances of underage gamblers in their premises. In 2019 itself, the casino reported 32 instances where underage children were involved in gambling or liquor consumption. The liquor and gambling regulatory body of NSW, has mentioned that the recent incident of a 12-year-old girl who was caught gambling has landed The Star casino a fine of AUD 90,000 ($63,712).

The 12-year-old girl and her parents were visiting Australia from China on tourist visas. The girl’s mother tried to get her into the casino via the exit door, took her to the main gaming floor and watched her placing bets on machines for over 15 minutes. While leaving the venue they were questioned and the NSW independent liquor and regulatory body issued it as a serious breach of law.

The NSW, liqour and gaming is an agency of the South Wales government and it is responsible for the regulation of liquor wagering, gaming and registered clubs of NSW. The ILGA director of investigation and intervention, David Bryne mentioned that underage youth trying to sneak in through the exit doors of the casino should have been taken care of and the authorities must have preempted this in the first place.

Bryne also said, “Not only did the Star fail to manage the risk, once the child was on the gaming floor, there were a number of opportunities where their staff should have noticed a very young person playing the poker machines ” . In another incident that occurred in the recent past, a 17-year-old was served alcohol and played 22 rounds of roulette until the security found out about it and was forced to leave the casino. The Star  themselves reported about three incidents which occurred between March and July 2019, but were still fined for the same.
