In a recent development, another US state is now inching nearer to legalize sports betting within its territory. The northeastern state of Connecticut has seen a bill being submitted in the state’s Senate. The bill ‘LCO 578’ is a bi-partisan effort and if passed would legalize sports betting in the state.
Connecticut’s southeastern delegation have submitted the bill. Under the proposed law, sports betting would be operated by the state’s casinos while the Connecticut Lottery would look after online Keno (a game of chance similar to lotto).
Concerned lawmakers of Connecticut are expected to address this bill in the upcoming legislative session beginning Wednesday, 9th January 2019. Connecticut’s Senator Cathy Osten stated, “Connecticut needs to play catch-up with surrounding states if we’re serious about modernizing our existing gaming industry. Fortunately, we can do that with a relatively simple regulatory fix. We have the infrastructure with the tribal casinos, we can use the new revenue, and we’ve got bipartisan support. This should be an early session success story.”
Recently, in opposing news, Michigan’s Governor Rick Snyder vetoed an online gambling bill stating its negative social impact as the main reason. Snyder had said in his statement that the bill would “encourage gambling by making it much easier to do so.” He also added that it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to sign a legislation which would result in more gambling.
Coming back to Connecticut, state senator-elect Norm Needleman was also quoted as saying, “Two of Connecticut’s top-10 largest employers will benefit from this bill. The U.S. Supreme Court has already cleared the way legally, so I believe it’s incumbent on us as state policymakers to do what’s necessary to remain relevant and profitable in a rapidly expanding new national industry.”
Following United State Supreme Court’s landmark order to nullify the previous federal ban on sports betting, many states have now already legalized sports betting and online gambling in their region. Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, West Virginia and New Mexico are the states which have legalized sports betting. Washington D.C. also recently approved a sports betting bill in its City Council.
