Santhosh Suvarna Misses EPT Glory, Secures Barcelona Podium Finish

Indian poker star Santhosh Suvarna came agonizingly close to etching his name onto a coveted European Poker Tour (EPT) trophy in Barcelona, continuing what has been a hot run for him in the last 10-12 months in live poker. He recently played the €12,300 PokerStars Cuatro Knockout at Casino Barcelona, where he achieved a podium finish.

EPT Barcelona 2024 is between 26th Aug – 8th Sep 2024, and Suvarna already has two major cashes in his name. He grabbed 10th place in the €10,200 Mystery Bounty, but went on to better it in this €12k buy-in high-stakes tournament, where Suvarna navigated a field of talented players (62 entries), but fell short of capturing the coveted title.

The eventual champion was Steve O’Dwyer, a popular Irish poker pro who displayed exceptional skill and resilience throughout the tournament. O’Dwyer walked away with a staggering €163,720 for their victory, plus four bounties, solidifying their position among the elite in the European poker scene.

Santhosh Suvarna – 3rd place finish in EPT Barcelona

O’Dwyer finished as the winner after beating USA’s Byron Kaverman in a heads-up, while our pro Suvarna’s impressive run ended in third place. The Indian player has been on a tear in the past year, having secured two coveted World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, one in Europe in 2023 and then recently in Las Vegas earlier this year.

His Barcelona podium finish further cements his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the international poker circuit. He grabbed €77,900 (~ ₹73 Lakh) as prize money, along with a further €48,000 (~ ₹45 Lakh) for his four bounties.

The final table witnessed a nail-biting display of strategic brilliance and calculated risks. Suvarna battled it out with some of the world’s best, showcasing his composure and adaptability under pressure. Although he couldn’t secure the ultimate win, his performance throughout the tournament was commendable.

PokerStars Cuatro Knockout final table payouts:

  • 1st place – Steve O’Dwyer – €163,720
  • 2nd place – Byron Kaverman – €107,400
  • 3rd place – Santhosh Suvarna – €77,900
  • 4th place – David Coleman – €59,100
  • 5th place – Ottomar Ladva – €45,700
  • 6th place – Joakim Andersson – €34,900
  • 7th place – Fabiano Kovalski – €26,900
  • 8th place – Martin Zamani – €21,500

While Suvarna might have missed out on the EPT title this time around, his Barcelona performance is a testament to his consistent growth and exceptional talent. With his recent WSOP triumphs and this impressive deep run, the Indian poker prodigy has sent a clear message to the world – he’s here to stay, and future victories are likely on the horizon. He recently placed 2nd at the Super High Roller Bowl in Cyprus, taking home $220,000 for his outing.

All eyes now turn to the €1,100 Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event, where Day 1D recently concluded. With several tournaments left on the schedule, we expect some further results from Suvarna in this series. Who knows, he might bring back an EPT title from Barcelona, too.
