Is Rummy Banned In India?

Rummy is one of the most popular card games in India, with a vast majority of people known to enjoy the game. While this card game was usually played at gatherings, online rummy has been a regular play amongst the country’s people.

Indian Supreme Court On Rummy

The primary basis for arguing that the rummy game is illegal and should be banned was the Indian Contract Act of 1872. Section 30 of the aforementioned Indian Contract Act, 1872, claimed that “agreements by way of wager are void, and no suit shall be brought for recovering anything alleged to be won on any wager, or entrusted to any person to abide by the result of any game or other uncertain event on which any wager is made.”

However, the Supreme Court of India passed a judgment In 1968 and ruled that rummy needs a substantial element of skill to play and is not just a game of luck. The Supreme Court passed this judgment during the case of the State Of Andhra Pradesh vs K. Satyanarayana. 

Is Rummy legal in India?

Rummy is not banned but, in fact, legal in India, barring a few states. Playing online rummy in states like Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland, Telangana, Sikkim, and Odisha is not legal and not available across any rummy site. 

Apart from those, multiple court rulings have stated that playing rummy is legal. Many states have framed laws to regulate online rummy as well, which solidifies its legal status in India. India still awaits a uniform regulation for online real money games which will further establish the skill aspect of this card game which many now play for a living.
