What Are The Basics Of Rummy?

Rummy has grown a lot in the recent past and turned out to be one of the most popular card games in India. While it was just played as a recreational activity earlier, we have seen players making a career out of it and playing rummy online professionally.

Given the game’s exponential rise, a lot of people have now started to enter the rummy space and are looking to learn the card game. While the game is played offline as well as online, the rules of the game remain the same. So let’s start from the lowest of the low and understand the basics of rummy. One thing is for sure; you are going to be all pumped up for your first online rummy game at the end of this article; so, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

Rummy Basics

Rummy is a game that can be played with two or more players. You will need two decks of cards with the jokers for this game. In a standard rummy game, every player is dealt a total of 13 cards. Once those cards are dealt, all the others are placed face down at the centre in a pile shape manner and are called the closed deck.

Later on, a card at random is picked from the set and is announced as the wild joker. It is also worth rehashing the rank of cards in rummy. The rank of cards for each suit is shared in ascending order. It goes as Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King.

Rummy Scheme

The whole concept of playing this game is to create sets and sequences. In order to win the game, a player must make at least two valid sequences. It is important to note that one should be a pure sequence at any cost. The remaining one can either be an impure sequence or any other valid set. The player who is quick to meld the cards perfectly and declares the valid hand first is crowned as the winner of the round.

Sets And Sequences In Rummy

In rummy, a sequence is made of cards that have the same suit with three or more cards arranged in consecutive order. As mentioned earlier, there are two types of sequences in rummy. A pure sequence is one that is formed without the use of a joker, for example (5♥ 6♥ 7♥). Similarly, an Impure sequence is something which contains a joker (3♠ 4♠ 5♠ 10♥). In this scenario, the 10♥ is used as the wild joker, with the card being substituted for 6♠. Moving onto sets, a set is made of cards that have value but are from different suits, for example, (A♥ A♣ A♦).

Scoring In Rummy

It is important to note the value a card holds in rummy when it comes to scoring. To start off, the Ace card has 1 point, while the face cards – King, Queen, and Jack carry 10 points each. Other cards have a value which is equivalent to their face value. Players pick the card from the open deck or from the discarded deck during each round. They must also discard a card from their hand after picking a card from either of the deck.

How To Win In Rummy

A player can win in rummy after he/she declares the hand by managing to form valid sets and sequences. Once the winner declares his/her hand, the scores are counted. Cards that are of no use to either set or sequence go on to add points to a player’s tally. The main aim of a player is to have the lowest number of points against their name, as players with the highest points end up being the losing player.

That’s it; these are the basics of rummy. It is worth remembering that a player should first and foremost create the sets and sequences before making the declaration. Remember, a pure sequence is a mist and should not be missed in any way! It is also crucial to ensure that you do not declare in haste and have all the combinations locked in before the declaration.

Popular Types of Rummy

Deals Rummy

Deals rummy is a 13-card variant of rummy which is played between 2-6 players. It can either be played by one or two decks of cards depending upon the number of players. It is also worth noting that the printed joker cards are also used in the game. before the game begins, a wild joker card is selected and it can be used to replace a card while forming a sequence or a set.

To start the game, players decide who will make the first move via a toss. Every player is given a card to pick either from open or closed deck. During the course of this game, players are required to arrange 13 cards into sets or sequences, just like 13 card rummy. The player who declares a valid hand with a pure sequence and overall two sequences wins the round.

Points Rummy

Points Rummy is an engaging rummy variant which can be perfect for beginner level rummy players! It is a good way for players to build familiarity with the rummy rules and strategies before moving on to the other variants of rummy. Just as the name suggests, players play for points in this rummy variant. While it is somewhat similar to the traditional 13 card rummy game, It is an exciting version which makes it more preferrable for players who like quick action!

While the rules are slightly different compared to regular rummy, it is still a quite simple and easy game to play. One of the best part of Points rummy is that the game lasts only for a single round. This single round serving of the game works well for everyone be it a beginner who is learning the ropes or an expert player.

Before the start of each round in Points Rummy, players get together and pre-decide a rupee value based on which the game goes on. Since players themselves fix the rupee value, it gives every participant a sense of ownership which makes Points rummy very popular.

Shanghai Rummy

This version of the game reportedly draws its origins from China. However, it is also known as California Rummy. It is a very fun game which is played between 3-8 players. Despite being similar to other well-known rummy variants, what makes Shanghai Rummy a completely different experience are a few distinctions. It is very simple and easy to grasp, which makes it a popular choice amongst families. Being a extremely dynamic and interactive, Shanghai rummy is also a fun way to relax.

It would not be wrong to describe Shanghai Rummy as a combination of Gin and Contract rummy. However, one key notable distinction between both these rummy variants is the number of deals played in a game as it reduces from 10 to 7 while moving from Gin rummy to Contract rummy.

In Shanghai Rummy, two decks of cards are used in for 3-4 players with one joker. However, the number of card decks being used to play goes up to three with two jokers are used if there are 5-8 players. Every player is dealt with 11 cards while the remaining cards are placed with the back in the deck, face down.

A game of Shanghai Rummy begins when a player who is seated on the left of the dealer either draws a card from the top of the pile or discards a card from his own hard. In this variant, Players can also ‘buy’ a card, which makes it a game with a refreshing break apart from the common rummy variants.

Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is one of the most played variants citing its widespread popularity. This two-player variant of rummy is enjoyed as a social game and can be played online as well.

As per reports, rummy was created by Elwood T. Baker and his son in 1909. It remained a local game in New York until 1941 before being publicised across the United States of America since it became a Hollywood fad. Gin Rummy remains to be one of the most widely-played two-player card games.

The main objective in gin rummy is to form groups of cards called melds, with the participants looking to be the first player, aiming to reach the predetermined score, which usually is 100 points.

In order for players to win Gin Rummy, one needs to form the meds by either creating sets of the same number or sequences of consecutive numbers in the same suit. A player can win by creating combinations of melds which can be all sets, all runs, or some sets and some runs.
