Rishi Mehra is the latest poker player to make the Indian contingent proud at an international poker series. This time, it is the APT Taipei PC 2024. He placed second at the #91: APT High Roller—TWD 11,000,000 GTD and took home TWD 3,484,000 (~₹90,79,924). He was second only to Martin Sedlak of Germany, who took home the lion’s share of the prize pool – a whopping TWD 5,244,000 and an APT trophy. In the event, the total entries were 275, and only 39 players cashed out. The total prize pool was TWD 26,136,000. All in all, this was truly a High Roller event.
Mehra waded through the opponents throughout the day and finally met with Martin Sedlak for a heads-up showdown. In the end, Rishi’s A ♠ 7 ♣ was sent to the rails by Sedlak’s 9 ❤ 9 ♦ .
This event was set to be in the big leagues, with a prize pool more than double that of the GTD. Mehra’s winnings are definitely substantial. This is Mehra’s first cash in the series. His career, according to Hendonmob, is still young, so this will be a landmark for him. Mehra’s first cash was in 2023, at the ₱ 46,000 + 4,000 No Limit Hold’em of Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) 2023, when he stood 6th and took home ₱ 127,000.

His highest cash before this was at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour APPT Manila 15 in August 2024, when he cashed $14,296. Mehra has played primarily in Danang and Manila, but interestingly, he hasn’t yet played cashed in a series in his home country. Will some Indian event interest Mehra? That remains to be seen.

Mehra joins the elite Indian poker group that has seen cash-ins in this particular event. Earlier, Kunal Patni finished 8th at the Micro Main Event. Other Indians who saw money at the event were Akash Malik and Abhinav Iyer.
In recent times, there have been multiple examples of Indians coming exhilarating close to shipping events but then contending themselves to be among the top ten names who took home cash, like when Abhinav Iyer was runner-up at Event # 32, High Roller—Double Stack of the same tournament. Interestingly, Abhinav Iyer was part of this event as well and cashed out at #21, taking home TWD 256,000 (~₹6,66,975).
Of course, reaching that spot is an exemplary task, and it remains to be seen how long it will take for an Indian to ship an event.
There are still some events left at APT Taipei PC 2024, and it’s always fascinating to think about which other Indians will see money or even ship an event. Gutshot Magazine has constant updates about what’s going on at the felts in Taipei.
